Tower Grove East Studio

Photos of my studio in the Tower Grove East Neighborhood-- St Louis.

I have been in the studio for 5 years now...and loved every minute.

these photos were taken by a great photographer -- Jamie Harmon. Jamie is from Valdosta, GA. He visited St. Louis this past week with his wife- Danielle and kids -- Gus and Hopper.

I had a wonderful time showing them my space and City Garden downtown.

The exterior and interior of my space make it look larger than it is... but it suits me fine.

The bottom photo is the back of my easel... with my collection of toys..........

Splash watercolor

this is a large scale watercolor -- in the works....

it's already past this stage.. but i haven't photographed it yet.

it's a lively painting.. one that's built around a 'verb'.. and not a noun!

stay tuned for final stage...will be posting it when it's done.

Palms Patterns

i have been working on this full sheet watercolor -- with varying degrees of intensity for the last few days.

as weather has permitted... i've been painting outside [see photo] .. to capture the pure light. the details and value changes of this piece have been a challenge. I still have some passages to go... but need to take rest ... because my spirit is fatigued.

i plan to start a companion piece -- to make the patterning more monumental.

Small watercolors

these 3 watercolors have been slightly reworked for my upcoming show. i like revisiting some pieces.. and tweaking them to say more. it gives them an additional richness.. with the perspective of time and distance.

Final 23 Portrait -- watercolor

The final portrait is done! i put small veils of wash to integrate the figure to background. the burnt sienna wash and the prussian blue veil of color soften the transition. i felt that the bottom 1/3 of the painting needed value.

Evan's 23 Portrait- watercolor

i have been doing a watercolor portrait a year of my son. this is his 23rd portrait [well, i've done a few more than 23...] ...

here he is as the happy college graduate.

the complete series of this work can be found on my website: http://www.carol-carter.com/ under GROWTH PORTRAITS.

it's been a wonderful endeavor. i first imagined that i would end the series at age 21... but now i've set the high goal of continuing the portraits for as long as i can.

Big Splash-- watercolor

Reworking an older watercolor... bringing to life an older watercolor that intrigued me once again. the splash is the central focus of the piece --- but the abstraction is also a big part of the piece.

US BANK

I went to the US BANK in Clayton today.. and saw my painting in the lobby.

This 6' x 8' painting is from the BELLE GLADE series of work from 1995. I loved all the passages and appreciated seeing a format I don't work in anymore.

It was like bumping into an "old friend!"

Palm Watercolor

I have had the time to paint a palm painting.. which will be a diptych --in the last couple of days.

This photo is about 2/3's complete. I still have a few white passages and darks/lights/details to include.

but.. as soon as the light changes in the studio -- I can't make huge decisions.
