Skyy- Postcards From the Edge of Florida-- new watercolor!

I am embarking on new skyy paintings in my watercolor for the upcoming show:

Postcards From The Edge of Florida.

I was mesmerized by the skies in South Florida on my last trip.  I had to pull over on the highway and photograph.  I could NOT believe how beautiful and captivating the rolling clouds were.

The overwhelming beauty was somthing to behold!

I only hope I can capture a fraction of it with watercolor.....  a hope, prayer, and challenge.

Enjoy~

Ablution-- Triptych watercolor: Hot Off The Press

I've just finished my first figurative swimmer watercolor in a long long time.
It is different for me.  The figure is more fractured and abstracted with water.

It started out as one-- and kept developing.

I will have this on display at my Florida show in January.

Details to follow.

Clearwater

I am down in Clearwater-- heading down to the Everglades tomorrow. There is a lot of tension in Florida about the potential oil disaster. There is reason for concern-- with the disturbing reports coming from the news.

I am planning on photographing the Everglades in the next few weeks-- but also leaving time and energy available to come back to the upper panhandle of the Florida Coast- and Louisiana and Mississippi to document the oil damage.

It is most upsetting to think that such a pristine environment could be destroyed by impending oil.

Reeds Watercolor

Here is a large scale watercolor of reeds -- that has taken some time to complete.
I am really happy with the palette -- and the complexity of the piece. There is a sultry character to this painting... that is sometimes missing in my other work.

Will frame it tomorrow for an exhibition.

Corkscrew Natural Sanctuary

I came to Florida in search of a new body of images to work from. I have wanted to paint the natural "swamp" for some time -- and the EVERGLADES seemed like a good canidate. It's in my own backyard - and I had been there before.

My brother and I went last week to photograph the easter and southern portion of the "glades" -- and today --- I drove across the Tamiami Trail.

This road intersects the norther Everglades--- Shark River and Big Cypress Swamp. It was all so overwhelmingly beautiful! A crystal clear day --- without bugs or clouds. The animals were out in full force-- gators, herons, egrets, anhingas, wood storks, cranes, barrel owls, and more. If I were a "birder" ... I would be able to identify them all! However, I am not that quick!

So, here's just a taste of what I saw. In the weeks and months to come - you will see painted translations of the glorious part of the world called "Everglades: River of Grass."

Enjoy!

Art Center of South Florida- Miami Florida

This art co-op on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach was outstanding. It's a grouping of art studios available for inexpensive rent on the most fashionable of streets.
It's a wonderful place for artists to network and gain traction in their work, careers, and vision. There's an exhibition space for rent.. and even an "in house" art supply store! How cool is that??

A jewelry lab, a photo studio, sculpture... and classes. It was so wonderful to see.

I would love to jury into this to gain an introduction to the art community here.

I went to see the other art co-op -- the BAKEHOUSE in the Wynwood District of Miami. This co-op is even larger -- with 70 artists studios, two exhibition spaces, outdoor foundry, off street parking.. and much more

What a terrific way for artists to work side by side-- network and gain traction in a community professionally.

I was most impressed with the quality of work and the surrounding facilities of both.

This may be a good way to integrate into the area professionally!

Ft Lauderdale

Tons of art galleries in Ft. Lauderdale --- mostly on Las Olas Blvd -- but others sprinkled through the town.

Sam [my brother] and I found a lot of people willing to talk and share ideas about the art in the area. For the most part... as you would expect -- sales are down and the economy is hurting them.... but there seems to be an air of perseverance -- and I found the spirit refreshing.

There is NO loss for people on the streets-- the area is crawling with northerners and tourists. It's wonderful to see all the cars, people, enthusiasum..... it's so different that St Louis!

Everglades!

sam and i went to the everglades today.. my friend-- carla also came with us. we had an amazing day! perfect weather -- and cool breeze. it was clear, crisp, sunshiney, and warm.

every hammock we walked in to -- offered more chance to relax and feel the presence of the everglades. peaceful, calm, tranquil, and teeming with life. we saw cormorants, gators, great blue herons, roseate spoonbills, cranes, cattle birds, ospreys, anhingas, and much more.

it was magical. it was one of those days that will remain in memory.
